Speaker Test (Left & Right)
Play a test tone left, right or both to check sound and direction.
It's for checking by ear that sound plays and the channels are right; it doesn't measure speaker quality or hearing.
Start with the volume low and raise it gradually, especially with earphones or headphones.
The sweep runs from very low to very high pitch. If part of it is hard to hear, don't turn the volume up.
Out of phase flips the right channel. On stereo it often sounds hollow or spread out, and if the output is mixed to mono it may nearly vanish.
No audio files, no microphone, nothing saved.
How to use
- Make sure the volume is low (20% by default).
- Pick a tone and press Left, Right or Both to hear whether it comes from the right side.
- The tone stops by itself after a few seconds, or press Stop.
- If you like, compare In phase and Out of phase with Both.
Examples
Left → right earbud
If you press Left and hear it in the right earbud, they're probably swapped or connected the other way round. Swap them and press again.
FAQ
I pressed Left but hear it on the right.
Your earphones or headphones may be on the wrong way, the speaker cables swapped, or the left/right balance in your system sound settings shifted.
Left only plays on both sides.
The output is being mixed to mono: a single speaker, a mono built-in speaker, or a mono audio accessibility setting in your system.
I hear nothing at all.
Check that the right output device is selected, that the device and browser tab aren't muted, and that your phone isn't in silent mode. Sound only starts when you press a button.
Windows says it "failed to play test tone".
Check that the right output device is selected in sound settings, the device connection and driver, and whether another app is holding the device in exclusive mode. If this page plays sound, playback through the browser is working.
I can't hear the end of the sweep.
Devices and earphones differ in how high they can play, and people differ in what they hear. This page gives no benchmark, so don't turn the volume up to chase it.
Does it use my microphone or record anything?
No. It never asks for the microphone; the tone is generated in your browser, and nothing is downloaded or sent.
