Pomodoro Timer

25 minutes down, then 5. The tab title carries the countdown.

Focus

25:00

Lengths

No sound and no notifications — the tab title carries the countdown.

Everything happens on this device. Nothing is stored.

How to use

  1. Press start and 25 minutes runs down. The tab title shows the same number.
  2. At zero it stops and says what comes next. The break starts when you press it.
  3. Change the minutes under Lengths. The long break lands after the fourth focus stretch.

Examples

What happens at zero

It stops and waits, showing "next: short break". Nothing starts behind your back, so a break cannot run out while you are not looking.

While the tab sits in the background

The time left is the end time minus the clock. Browsers slow or stop timers in hidden tabs; this one reads the clock again when you come back, so the number is right.

Other lengths

50 and 10 works as well as 25 and 5. Focus takes 1 to 90 minutes, the short break 1 to 30, the long one 1 to 60.

Deciding what to work on first

A timer cannot order a list. Splitting the list into four boxes is the other tool. Eisenhower Matrix

FAQ

Does it make a sound?

No. There is no audio file to download with the page and it never asks for notification permission. At zero the screen and the tab title change, and that is all.

What is a pomodoro?

A way of writing out time: 25 minutes of work, a 5-minute break, and a longer break after every fourth one. The name dates from the 1980s. Those lengths are the defaults here; whether the scheme suits you is a different question, and this page only counts.

Is it accurate if I am looking at another tab?

Yes. The time left is worked out from the end time, not by adding up ticks, so a tab that was throttled or frozen does not fall behind. Come back and the number is already right.

Does it keep a record?

No. How many stretches you finished is forgotten when you reload, and nothing is sent anywhere. There are no accounts and nothing to sign in to.

What about a phone with the screen off?

The countdown stays correct — turn the screen back on and it carries on from where the clock says it should be. It cannot tell you anything while the screen is off.

Why does it not roll straight into the break?

Because a break that starts on its own can be over before you see it. You have to come back to the page to know either way, so it stops and waits for the press.
