Markdown Preview

Type on the left, read on the right. No upload, no scripts run.

Preview

The preview appears here.

How to use

  1. Paste or type Markdown into the box. The preview follows as you type.
  2. On a narrow screen the two swap with the tabs above the box.
  3. Copy gives you the source back, or the HTML the preview is built from.

Examples

Checking a README before pushing

Nested lists and tables are the two things that break silently. Seeing them rendered takes a second and saves a second commit.

Reading an .md file someone sent

Open it in a text editor, copy everything, paste it here. No install, and the file never leaves your machine.

Taking the HTML somewhere else

The HTML button gives you what the preview is made of — headings, lists and links, with no wrapper, no classes and no inline styles beyond table alignment.

Comparing two drafts

For the difference between two versions, line by line, that is the other tool. Text Diff

FAQ

Is my text uploaded?

No. The rendering happens in your browser and nothing is sent anywhere, which is why this works on a document you would not paste into an online editor.

What happens to HTML inside the Markdown?

It is shown as text. The renderer escapes everything first and then writes only the tags it generates, so a script tag in the source appears on the page as characters and never runs. That also means raw HTML you intended as markup will not render.

Which Markdown does it follow?

Headings, paragraphs, bold, italic, strikethrough, inline and fenced code, links, images, bullet and numbered lists with nesting, block quotes, horizontal rules and tables. Not footnotes, definition lists or raw HTML.

Why did my single line break disappear?

A single newline is a space, as it is on a README. Leave a blank line for a new paragraph.

Why is my link plain text?

Only http, https, mailto, anchors and relative paths become links. A javascript: or data: target is left as text on purpose — this page will not build a link that runs something.

Does the preview look like GitHub?

The structure matches; the styling is this site’s. What renders as a heading here renders as a heading there, which is the part worth checking before you push.
