Base64 Encoder & Decoder

Text and files to Base64 and back, safe for any language.

Base64 is not encryption: anyone can decode it, so don't use it to hide passwords or personal data. Files up to 10 MB.

How to use

  1. Choose Encode and type some text; the Base64 appears right away. Set URL-safe, padding or line wrapping if you need to.
  2. To reverse it, choose Decode and paste the Base64.
  3. For a file or an image, pick it on the File tab to get Base64 or a data URI.
  4. Take the result with Copy or Save as file.

Examples

hello → aGVsbG8=

"hello" → aGVsbG8= (aGVsbG8 without padding). The emoji 😀 → UTF-8 bytes F0 9F 98 80 → 8J+YgA==, or 8J-YgA as URL-safe without padding.

FAQ

What is Base64?

A way to write bytes using 64 characters: upper- and lower-case letters, digits, + and /. Every 3 bytes become 4 characters, so the result is about 4/3 the original size.

Why does Korean text come out garbled?

This tool turns text into UTF-8 bytes before encoding and reads decoded bytes as UTF-8. Base64 made from another encoding (such as EUC-KR) shows a not-UTF-8 notice; save it as a file and open it with a program that supports that encoding.

What is URL-safe Base64?

It uses - and _ instead of + and /, which mean something in URLs, and often drops the trailing = padding. It's used in places like JWT. Decoding accepts both forms automatically.

How do I turn an image into a data URI?

Pick the image on the File tab and switch the output to data URI; you get a value you can put straight into an img src or CSS. It's about 4/3 the size of the file, so it suits small images.

Can I turn Base64 back into a file?

Yes. Paste it under Decode and press Save as file; data URIs work as they are. The extension comes from the data URI type or the first bytes, and .bin is used when it can't be told.

Is Base64 encryption? Is my input sent anywhere?

No. It's a way of writing data that anyone can reverse, so never use it to hide passwords or personal data. Your text and files are processed only in this browser and are never saved or sent.
